Treatment for Pruritis Ani

The treatment for pruritis ani will depend on the underlying cause. The first rule of thumb is less is more.

Maintain good hygiene: Clean the anal area after every bowel movement and be sure to dry thoroughly. Clean soon after vigorous exercise with a lot of sweating in the area.

Avoid irritants: Don’t be overzealous with hygiene. Avoid wet wipes and witch hazel as these can be very irritating. Avoid using harsh soaps or products that contain irritants. Mild soaps and mineral oil based cleansers are soothing.

Some common treatments for anal itching include:

Medications: Over-the-counter creams or ointments, such as hydrocortisone, can help relieve itching if due to a skin disorder or allergy. Antifungal or antibacterial creams may be prescribed if an infection is present.

Diet changes: Avoiding certain foods that trigger itching can help reduce symptoms.

Bowel changes: Increasing fiber in the diet can allow for an improved consistency of the bowel which makes wiping after movements cleaner

Moisturizing: Using a barrier cream or ointment similar to those used for diaper rash can help soothe dry, irritated skin.
